Munich Day 1-24th March 2008

Arrival at Berlin at 06:15 hours.
Checked out the bus tickets to Munich-41 EUR with a 9hr journey.
Train tickets-82 EUR with a 4.5 hr journey.
Opted for the cheaper option of course!
Lengthy bus journey because it was in the day so you feel more uncomfortable.

Arrival at Munich-17:30 hours.
Checked-in to the hostel. Cool one.. Beers @ 0.20 EUR!!
Needed to get some real good food since we were starving.

Central Train Station-Munich

Recommendation from Hostel-Augustiner Brew house.
Went to the fake one initially then the waiter was nice to tell us the correct one
It was EXTREMELY-PACKED when we arrived.
Couldn't get a seat at all and had to wait half an hour before we finally got one.
It's damn cool!

Inside the brewery

If you have seen OctoberFest on TV or in pictures
You will find it familiar.
Long benches and tables
Everyone crowding around with those 1-litre beer mugs in their arms.
The waiters and waitresses (small-sized women) could carry 6-10 beer mugs at one shot!
The waiter initially didn't seem willing to serve us.
Big-sized German with moustache looked really FIERCE and UNFRIENDLY.
Luckily there was this nice German family sitting beside us.
I asked the dad what the german menu was all about.
He started explaining to us in English
Wasn't too fluent but he was really extremely helpful.
We actually had 2 dishes on our mind already - recommended by the hostel.
He even went to the extent to ask the waiter for the English menu for us.
But he couldn't really understand English himself so we had a hard time matching the dishes.
After ordering, he told us.
"My son actually can speak English very fluently!"
WTH? Then why didn't he make a sound earlier on?
His son is quite cute. haha..

The father and son looked really close
They toasted each other to their beers and of course the mom and the daughter
At first we thought all of them were having beers
It turned out that the mom and the daughter were just drinking APPLE JUICE.
So I asked WHY?!
Then the Dad was like GIRLS usually drink JUICE!
Did I just sense the German Ego-ism?
Maybe, but he meant well too I guess. :)

Good Food!
They actually turn bread into patty. Weird.
I wanted beer but Kim didn't want.
She asked the German father "Is there Erdinger here?"
He had a hearty laugh.
Apparently, Augustiner is a brewery itself so no one goes there to order other beer other than their own product.
So he told Kim she must not let anyone hear that.
When the dad knew I was from Singapore, he asked if I could sing him a song?
Wait a minute. Singapore and Singing? The Link?
Nah. It's just because they like music, singing, dancing so they wanted to hear some Singaporean songs.
Of course there wasn't any.
In the end, he made me sing Merry X'mas.
Guess what? I DID. :)

When we get the waiter to take photos for us, he took himself. *Hilarious*
The Nice German Family
After dinner, time to do some walking...
Headed to Konigsplatz-founding ground of Hitler's Nazi Party
It was rather dark and the whole place looked damn eerie
Kim was like, "Ginnelle, I think we should go."
So we left after i took several shots in 3 minutes...

I guess the highlight of Munich is the Hofbrauhaus-Beer Hall!
It's super lively in the beer hall I must say
They serve food and of course BEER!
Was at the function room initially and we were kind of disappointed
There's some function going on which explains why you get to see the video below
We thought it should be opened to the public
God knows when we went to the first hall
WOAH! Millions of people with those huge 1 litre mugs once again!
According to one of the guide, during Oktoberfest,
don't be surprised if you see a 1.57m tall old lady carrying 12 beer mugs at one go.
Don't fall off your chair nor don't stand in her way!
That's what you should DO! haha..

We were pretty tired so we decided to check it out the next night
Anyway, this beer hall was Hilter's favourite.
He held lots of meetings and gatherings here
When he first faced opposition and tried to bring the Nazis to power
He faced his first setback in this beer hall too

That's how the building should look like
Function Room-Young lads dancing.Band Playing.
I thought it was lovely seeing those old couples dancing on the dance floor.. CheerS!

The Main Entrance of Hofbrauhaaus
Stay tuned to tomorrow's post-hear the band!
Since today's post is short, shall share some Munich history with you guys !
Munich=München
If you plan to visit Munich or have been there,
You will realise you see München more often than Munich being shown.
Don't be surprised. München is the German abbreviation.
Mün=Monks. chen=city
So Munich is actually the City of Monks. WHY?!
It used to be populated with monasteries. (not the Chinese ones but the european version.)
Until some day, there's this knight from the Bavaria Empire who conquered Munich
Brought Munich under the Bavarian rule...
If you hear people talking about the Bavarians, yes it's the people of MUNICH
Everywhere here, you see the symbolic animal LION and monk miniatures on crests or flags
Then came Napolean who tried to take control of München
Followed by Hitler of course!
Today, Munich doesn't like to be reminded of its Nazi Past
No one really talks about it. It's a rather sensitive issue in Munich unlike Berlin
The ceilings of the beer house used to be decorated with the Swastika
The bavarian flag was arranged in the swastika manner
But they completely remove it
Scrubbed away every bit of it...

The thing you will love about Munich is its where the OktoberFest takes place!
It was meant to be the wedding celebration of Prince Ludwig I with Therese
People don't work that long hours during oktoberfest
Instead they gather with friends and family
Drinking beer all day and all night long!
I made a pact with Alvin.
We must go back to Munich during Oktoberfest one day
Drown ourselves in those beers............
Anyone interested to join us ?!
