New year countdown was in the most unanticipated form this year nevertheless, I enjoyed it.!
Woke up to a bright and sunny 1130 a.m. on 31st December 2009. My brother convinced me to visit the Louis Vuitton store with him because he wanted to get the wallet and he needed someone that is a regular of the LV store to accompany him. Of course, I radiate some "high-class" aura too to tame the snobbish salesperson! Actually, I don't know the real reason. Lol! Alright, self-praise is no praise but having carried a LV for so many donkey years, I pass off as someone decent enough to afford this prestigious brand.
So we headed to town together with my sister first to Kaplan to settle my brother's enrolment before heading to lunch. As usual, when the 3 of us gather, lunch will never be anything shoddy. The fortunate restaurant came knocking on our wallets asking for money and we gladly paid to fill our stomachs! It was the last day of the year and we found no reason to compromise with lunch. Fortunately, the restaurant did not disappoint and after lunch, it was LV-hunting once again! It was my virgin visit to the LV-ION store. Double-storeys flagship store with the trademark doorman. I bet no one can miss it.
The decisive-gene runs in our blood man. My brother decided on the wallet within a quick 15 minutes and he was given a complimentary name-stamping service on that very day. :) So he had his initials printed on his wallet, how cool can that be man?! I guess he deserve to reward himself for plucking up courage to resolve the many problems in his life.
When it was my turn, things got more complicated because I fell in love with a bag that was unavailable in my beloved damier ebene print. Additionally, I find it irrational to buy a bag costing $2,500 cause that could buy me another air-ticket and a trip to Japan! Eventually I bought the Neverfull MM bag!
While I was waiting for the bag to be brought up from the first level, we saw this PRC hitched up with a Singaporean guy. The guy actually paid for a $2,510 LV bag for the girl! All 4 of us were damn shocked and my brother sarcastically commented that the guy's heart must be bleeding when he agreed to buy the bag.
I guess I can never resist the temptation of a LV. Linky and I often discuss about the reasons why we buy LV. Status, brand or design? You decide. I have read of many cases of girls who declare bankrupt out of their love for branded goods like LV, Gucci, Prada, etc. I have also seen reports of girls hooking up with old and filthy rich men owing to one word - materialism. I hate to see the world becoming like this but I question myself, "Ain't I a big patron of LV myself? So who am I to discourage other people to buy branded goods?"
If I were to rank the 3 reasons why I buy LV, Design comes first follow by status then lastly brand. Honestly, I only like one design and that is Damier Canvas Ebene. I am rarely fascinated by any other designer brands like Gucci and Prada because I would rather spend the money on travelling. :) Sometimes when I walk on the streets and see the numerous LV or Gucci surfacing among the crowd, I stare at the overall appearance and outfit of the person carrying it as well. To me, not everyone is qualified to have the LV bag strapped on their shoulders or nicely hanging on their lower arms. In particular, I can't stand people who carry all these designer bags to show off to their friends! People with status or class never need to show off because it is in-born, right?
Furthermore, think about this. If you scrimp and save just to buy a LV bag, then perhaps you would be better off just carrying a normal handbag and direct the money to other better purposes. Because if you have to scrimp and save to buy a designer bag, it might mean that you are not exactly that well-off to afford a designer bag and you will compromise with your attire. It sends out only one message - You're living beyond your means!
When you go to meet God some day and he gladly asks you what have you achieved in life? Declaring the number of designer bags you have do not count. :)
So I constantly remind myself the rationale behind me owning all these designer wallets and bags. That if I were to carry a LV bag, I must acquire the right status to accompany the bag and that the bag is my slave and not the opposite! When I was in Japan and Taiwan, I heard so many stories of girls, either in their teens or twenties, being "looked after" by older guys in exchange of money and branded goods. So what if you are able to afford all these designer bags eventually and you have a few grands rolling in your bank account, your status taints the reputation and the brand of the good.
But of course, I do not direct this message at anyone of any particular nationality and my opinions are just my three cents' worth.
After all the LV-hunting and a nice lunch, we proceeded to dinner with a few of my cousins before rounding off at Hendersen waves for fireworks-viewing. I love all these gatherings with my family. It may not be anything grandeur but the gathering never fails to warm my heart when I lie down on my bed at night at the end of day. Each gathering is always filled with fun, laughter, even tears! Of course, they are tears of joy! I was once again reminded of how much love these people had shown me over the years and that this stream of love will never dry up. For as much and for as long as I need it, they will always be there. :)
So the last lesson of 2009: Divert your attention away from the branded and expensive things and dreams at different moments in life because that's the only way for you to take time out to appreciate the little and unattractive things that are in fact priceless.
